Research On the genre’s
With the game I was going to make I decided that the genres had to fit in with the idea/theme that I was trying to go with, that being nostalgia. After this I started to look at what types of games came out during and around the 1990s that were popular and recognisable.
Whilst looking around I found an article that had quite a few games on it that were popular during the 90s and are still well known and popular today. This list included things such as:
- GoldenEye 007 – 1997
- Resident Evil – 1996
- Doom 64 – 1993
- Grand Theft Auto – 1997
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past – 1991
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – 1992
- Final Fantasy VII – 1997
- Super Mario World – 1990
- Super Metroid – 1994
After looking through these the ones I decided to base my game off of was Final Fantasy VII, Doom 64, Super Mario World and Grand Theft Auto. These were all iconic games that have expanded and grown from what they once were, and it felt as though a lot of people had grown up playing them.
The first genre of the four is an Role-Playing Game or more commonly known as an RPG. In an RPG the player will normally assume the roll of a character, or group of character within a fictional and normal fantasy based setting. Within these games the player will normally undergo multiple quest to increase the power of your character/s in both stats and skills.
The second genre of the four is First Person Shooter or also known as a FPS. Within an FPS the player experiences the action through the eyes of the protagonist, this genre is also centred around the use of guns and or weapons within a 3D environment. Normally these games will share common similarities with that of the “Action” genre of games due to there high octane gameplay loop and narrative.
The third genre of the four is a Platform Game, often referred to as a platformer. A platformer is a sub-genre of the action genre in which the main goal is to move the player character through a 2D environment. The levels that are formed for this genre normally consist of having traits such as, uneven terrain and suspended platforms of varying heights that require the player character to traverse to finish the level.
The fourth and final genre of the games is a Shoot ’em up game also known as a STG. This genre can vary a lot, spanning from games such as space invaders to enter the gungeon. This genre is defined normally by two things that being a shooting element within the game as well as it’s requirement to be 2D.

Major Project Proposal
The thing that I have chosen to do for my major project is an individual game which will be overseen by Adrian P Mills.
The game that I am creating will be a mix between 2D and 3D which will follow the main protagonist as he continues to fail defeating a boss over and over again, eventually falling down a hole and waking up in a different genre. Within these different genres he will need fight his way through to the end of them where he will unlock a new ability that he can use on the boss once he returns. Eventually after collecting enough he will be able to defeat the boss and finally win the game.
The game itself will consist of 4 different genres. The first genre will be a 3D turn based combat, this will be the main part of the game that you’ll return too after every level. This genre will also be were the protagonist continues his fight with the “boss”. The rest of the genres will consist of the side levels that you’ll either get pushed into or accidently fall into, and here you’ll receive your abilities. The first genre of these levels will consist of a 2D platformer, within this you will progress by platforming and fighting an array of monsters, after which you’ll receive the ability to bounce on the bosses head. The second genre of these levels will be a 2D top down shooter, within this you’ll have to survive a period of waves until something or someone helps you escape. You would receive a gun attachment for your sword in this genre. Finally the last genre that you would face would be a 3D first person shooter similar to that of the early Wolfenstein game and Doom game. Within this you’d continue fighting your way though enemies eventually getting to a cell were you would free a princess.
Throughout all of those different genres the abilities that you would gain would give you addition moves to use against the boss, which you would return to and fail fighting after every level. This is because when you first start you only have one attack, which is to swing your sword. After that you gain the ability to jump on the bosses head, this attack dealing more damage than your sword but still not enough. After that you would gain a gun attachment to your sword allowing you to do a slash and shoot attack dealing once again the most damage out of your abilities. Finally you would collect the princess who would assist you in the fight shedding her pretty dress for more of a badass appearance. Within this last fight you would be able to limit break and finally defeat the boss you’ve been struggling with for so long.
The style that I will be trying to achieve will be that of a retro/nostalgic look. This means that the 2D worlds will be made using pixel art, with the platformer having more of a fantasy look to it, and the top down shooter having a look more similar to that of the first GTA. The 3D first person shooter will also continue this idea, by it using 2D sprites in a 3D atmosphere similar to that of Doom 64 and Wolfenstein 3D. Finally the main world that you’ll be in will be a similar art style to that of the original Final Fantasy VII, with its blocky polygon characters, once again striving for that old school feel and aesthetic.
In keeping with the feeling of classic early 2000s/ late 90s the sounds that I use will be heavily influenced by games of a similar genre for each level.
The game itself will be of a decent size but should be able to be completed within roughly no longer than 15 minutes. This should make it a pleasurable experience that can be completed by even people who don’t have much time on there hands or don’t have a very long attention span.
